This was the title of a Facebook status update of a friend of mine and it made me smile! Sometimes eating pot noodle, or a simple bowl of cereal while snuggled on a sofa watching TV is the absolute best. But in the moment I read her update what I was thinking was ‘What a great metaphor this is!’ Isn’t that what we often end up doing in life? We love to watch others doing something. Sometimes we even aspire to it ourselves in our dreams. We are usually happy to leave it there: to simply observe and live in a very different reality, and that is often just fine. And then I thought ‘How would it feel to actually do it?’.
Here’s a thought: There are times when we are inspired by something we come across, but we never in a million years imagine we could do it. And yet deep down there is often a feeling that you could do something different, something awesome…but it seems out of reach and unattainable. So you might sigh, make yourself a coffee or pour yourself a glass or two of wine and return to life as normal.
I may not know you, but I do know that you are unique, with a vast array of talents and skills many of which you haven’t tried yet. How would it feel to break free and just go for something different? It might be taking an acting class, changing the colours of your walls, trying a completely different ‘look’, or putting yourself forward for a new role at work. Or perhaps it is something much bigger, like writing a book, quitting your job and doing something you love, auditioning for the Amazing Race, or taking a month to ride a horse through the rolling hills of Tuscany!
In part I think it is my own sense of spring fever driving this. Mostly though it is the many women I have come across recently (including some of my courageous and inspirational clients) who have done these very things, and it has been transformational for them. It will probably feel uncomfortable at first, but trust me it is utterly freeing. This kind of shift is noticeable to everyone around, and life-changing for those courageous enough to give it a try.
I know, I know, we all have responsibilities and not many of us could just run off on a whim and do something crazy. But all of us can do something a little bit different and see what that opens up. Here is how:
You might try these things:
1. Worry less about what people think, do your own thing and see where it takes you
2. Experiment with following your heart, not your head
3. Notice what you do in your spare time. What articles you read, what shows you watch, what engages you. How would it be to go ahead and do something like that rather than read about it?
With warmest wishes for a very happy day
