Here’s a thought: what if you could forge positive change in your life through something you use all the time: your words. Positive change in your health, your relationships, your level of happiness. Imagine for a moment not only dramatically transforming your life for the better, but all of those whose lives you touch.
Research tells us that the words we use have a profound effect on both our mind and body. Even flashing the word ‘No’ in front of you for less than a second releases dozens of stress-producing hormones. And if you say the word ‘No’ out loud it increases the effect. In fact negative words can disrupt your emotions, increase anxiety, effect your appetite, your sleep and your ability to be happy. If you have a moment read this great article in Psychology Today for more details.
Julian Treasure, founder and CEO of the Sound Agency lists the following as things to avoid when we speak to others: gossip, judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, exaggeration, lying and dogmatism. Finding a way to stop using these will make people listen to you at a deeper level and in addition you will create positive change all around you.
4 Tips To Make the Power of Your Word Extraordinary: (taken fromJulian Treasure’s inspiring TED talk)
- Honesty and always being true to your word
- Authenticity and always being true to yourself
- Integrity: be your word
- Love…the kind of love that wishes well. Use this as a guideline with all of your communications and you will not even be able to gossip, judge, be dogmatic.
