When A Fish First Realises It’s in Water
All of us have experienced s seismic shift in our sense of reality over the last 18 months.. How many times have you had the thought ‘Two years ago who could have imagined life/travel/school/going to the supermarket/(fill in the blanks) would be like this?’. Things that we took for granted in the past were no longer possible.
And to a greater or lesser extent we adapted.
I don’t want to dwell on the negatives, and what we haven’t been able to do at times, because in my experience that gets us nowhere. Instead, I want to reflect on aspects of our lives we have become freshly aware of, and see how we can use that to reassemble our life in a way that makes us happier.
I came across this quote from Dan Silver the other day:
“Fish don’t know they’re in water.”
I didn’t fully appreciate so many of the things I already had until it became a privilege to do them again.
Things that worked, and others that didn’t were thrown into sharp relief. Perhaps you experienced something similar?
It was as if I was that fish that fully realised its’ environment for the first time.
I saw the wonder of nature shifting with each season independent of what was happening in the background. It seemed miraculous.
I feel more connected and in awe of nature.
My appreciation of friends and family was magnified.
The house I live in has became a safe haven that I see with fresh eyes. I’ve painted, moved things around, decluttered, breathed new life into it.
Time seems so much more precious now.
So how am I going to embed all this into re-shaping my life now? Like so many things in life awareness comes first, and that is where I’m at now. Aware of elements in my life in a hyper-focused way.
How I will put the pieces together again in a way what works best for me now is work in progress. I am using this ‘go to’ tool to help me.
I encourage any of you that have had a similar experience of seeing your life differently to pause and reflect. What areas of your life are working well, and what would you like to tweak, or completely change?
This is a rare time in our history where so much has been fundamentally shaken up. We have an opportunity to be proactive about how we would like things to re-settle.
